Designing Experiences - La Milpa

Getting tasked with designing a second restaurant in 12 months is exciting and they couldn’t be more different from one another. One being in a resort setting, the latter being adjacent to Leeward highway.

The brief for La Milpa was to create a fun, engaging, slightly in the 80’s, narcoesque casual dining experience. With a bar being added to the brief late, we adjusted the design to suit and now have an engaging focal point, complete with neon and purple lights.

When design themes mix, the project instantly gets a personality of its own, as a result, we have the rich wood tones of the Mexican jungle next to movie posters from 80’s

Mexican cinema, next to old church pew seating. Everything has been considered right down to the staff uniforms and menus.

In terms of design, it’s very intensive, we modelled several iterations of materials testing, ceiling layouts and bar layouts before we arrived at the perfect set. I’m looking forward to it opening this season. Our designers Liberty and Tasha pulled all the crazy ideas together to create a fun vibrant New Mexican restaurant for Provo.
